Fill & Gradient

Gradient tool, paint bucket, fill region, and clear pixels.

Gradient Tool (G)

Create smooth color transitions across the canvas or within a selection. Supports linear, radial, angle, reflected, and diamond gradient types.

  1. Press G to select the Gradient tool.
  2. Choose a gradient preset or edit colors in the gradient editor.
  3. Select the gradient type (linear, radial, etc.) in the options bar.
  4. Click and drag on the canvas to define the gradient direction and length.
  5. Release to apply. The gradient fills the canvas or active selection.

Gradient Types

TypeDescription
LinearStraight-line gradient from start to end point
RadialCircular gradient from center outward
AngleSweeping gradient around the start point
ReflectedLinear gradient mirrored on both sides
DiamondDiamond-shaped gradient from center

Paint Bucket (G)

Fill an area of similar color with the foreground color or a pattern. Respects the tolerance setting to determine which pixels to fill.

  1. Press G and cycle to Paint Bucket (Shift+G or options bar).
  2. Set tolerance in the options bar (0-255).
  3. Click on the area to fill.

Fill with Solid Color

Fill the entire layer or selection with a solid color using the Edit → Fill command.

  1. Make a selection (optional -- fills entire layer if no selection).
  2. Go to Edit → Fill, or press Shift+F5.
  3. Choose foreground color, background color, or a custom color.
  4. Set blend mode and opacity for the fill.
  5. Click OK to apply.

Fill Within Selection

When a selection is active, fill operations are constrained to the selected area. This applies to both the Fill command and the Paint Bucket tool.

Clear Pixels

Delete the pixels within the current selection. On a normal layer, this sets the area to transparent. On a Background layer, it fills with the background color.

  1. Make a selection.
  2. Press Delete or go to Edit → Clear.
