Filters

Gaussian Blur, Sharpen, Add Noise, and Reduce Noise filters for image processing.

Gaussian Blur

Apply a smooth, bell-curve blur to the image or selection. The most commonly used blur filter for softening, creating depth of field effects, or preparing images for further processing.

  1. Go to Filter → Blur → Gaussian Blur.
  2. Set the Radius in pixels (0.1 - 250). Higher values create a stronger blur.
  3. The preview updates in real time.
  4. Click OK to apply.
Tip:Apply Gaussian Blur to a duplicate layer, then reduce the layer opacity for a subtle softening / glow effect.

Sharpen

Increase the apparent sharpness of the image by enhancing edge contrast. Useful for correcting slightly soft images or adding crispness.

  1. Go to Filter → Sharpen → Sharpen.
  2. For more control, use Unsharp Mask: set Amount, Radius, and Threshold.
  3. Click OK to apply.

Unsharp Mask Parameters

ParameterRangeDescription
Amount1-500%Strength of the sharpening effect
Radius0.1-250 pxSize of the area around each pixel to compare
Threshold0-255Minimum difference before sharpening applies

Add Noise

Add random noise (grain) to the image. Useful for creating film grain effects, texture overlays, or dithering smooth gradients to prevent banding.

  1. Go to Filter → Noise → Add Noise.
  2. Set the Amount (1-400%) for noise intensity.
  3. Choose distribution: Uniform (even) or Gaussian (bell-curve).
  4. Check "Monochromatic" for grayscale noise only.
  5. Click OK to apply.

Reduce Noise

Remove digital noise while preserving edges and detail. Works best on photographs taken at high ISO settings.

  1. Go to Filter → Noise → Reduce Noise.
  2. Set Strength (1-10) for overall noise reduction.
  3. Set Preserve Details (1-100%) to keep edge sharpness.
  4. Set Reduce Color Noise (1-100%) for chroma noise.
  5. Click OK to apply.

Applying Filters to Selections

When a selection is active, filters are applied only within the selected area. Feathered selections create smooth transitions at the filter boundaries.

Warning:Filters are destructive operations. Consider duplicating the layer before applying a filter, so you can always go back to the original.
